25+ Weird Slang Terms That Were Hugely Popular in Past Decades

November 6, 2025 by Jesse Olson

#16: On Sus

The term ‘on sus’ is another slang expression from the past that was commonly used to signify being ‘under suspicion.’ Originating in informal English during the mid-20th century, ‘on sus’ encapsulated the idea of being closely scrutinized or investigated for possible wrongdoing or questionable behavior.

The phrase conveyed a sense of unease or apprehension, suggesting that authority figures or peers were scrutinizing one’s actions or motives. We think it’s unfortunate that ‘on sus’ has become less common in contemporary language. It’s a pretty nice way to say that someone is under suspicion. Maybe we should bring it back.
