Marilyn Monroe and Arthur Miller
Marilyn Monroe’s third and final marriage was to playwright Arthur Miller in 1956. The couple’s honeymoon was spent in England, where Miller was working on a film adaptation of his play, The Crucible. They stayed at a country estate in Hampshire, where they enjoyed long walks in the English countryside and took day trips to nearby towns such as Winchester and Salisbury.
Marilyn also attended a performance of Miller’s play “A View from the Bridge” in London’s West End. Despite the picturesque setting, the honeymoon was plagued by tension, as Miller was struggling with writer’s block and Marilyn was dealing with personal and professional pressures. Their marriage would ultimately end in divorce in 1961, but their honeymoon in England remains a snapshot of a brief period of happiness in the tumultuous lives of two of America’s most celebrated artists.
