#59: Field of Dreams
Set Piece: Baseball Field
Location: Dubuque County, Iowa, USA
Production Budget: $15 million*
In the late ’80s, Field of Dreams hit the screens, spinning the tale of Ray Kinsella, a farmer who hears a mysterious voice urging him to build a baseball field, promising, “If you build it, they will come.” This simple phrase sets off a chain of events as Kinsella interprets it as a sign to create the diamond.
Initially, the story was just a short tale titled “Shoeless Joe Jackson Comes to Iowa” by W.P. Kinsella, who hadn’t written anything longer before. However, after an editor stumbled upon it, Kinsella expanded it into a full-length novel, eventually becoming a blockbuster movie, a true American dream story. Even today, the iconic field in Dubuque County, Iowa, remains, drawing fans from all over who come to relive the magic and maybe even glimpse the legendary ghost players.
