#24: Snake Eyes
Snakes have a number of distinctive characteristics that sets them apart from most animals, one of them particularly interesting: they don’t have eyelids. Instead, they possess a transparent scale over their eyes known as a spectacle or brille. This scale protects their eyes and keeps them moist. Since snakes lack eyelids, they can’t blink or close their eyes in the traditional sense.
However, they do have other ways to protect their eyes. Snakes rely on various adaptations, like burrowing behavior or specialized behaviors, to keep their eyes safe from potential threats. If you ever observe a snake seemingly blinking or closing its eyes, it’s not a snake at all but rather a legless lizard. These lizards have eyelids and are often mistaken for snakes due to their similar appearance.
